The real city with 4 seasons in a day

Now most of you from Australia would read the quote above and smirk to yourselves thinking, “What’s he on about? Is Melbourne not the only city with 4 seasons in a day?”. Wrong!

The weather in Hamburg changes quicker than the shade on Dee’s face when I eat my meat rare (her being a veggo). I attribute it to the clouds that seem to move at a million miles per hour over this gorgeous port city.

Chapter 1: Currywursht

What I discovered in Hamburg, I would not have conjured up in a lifetime – the greatest, tastiest and most simple dish that I’ve come across on my trip so far – Currywursht!

Now you might presume that this is the result of some terribly mutated curry with pork knuckle in it, and you would not be too far off the mark in thinking so. Currywursht is simple pork sausage coated with a healthy dose of ‘masala’ ketchup and powder. Having an inbred taste for anything ‘masala’, I took an instant liking to this delicious dish that whilst might not look very pleasing to the eye, does a great job in satiating my savoury glands. This was soon to become my brekkie, lunch, arvo snack, drunken food, everytime I had hunger pangs, I though currywursht!

The best thing since sliced bread!

Chapter 2: Couchsurfing

We stayed with Ksenia (from Russia), her boyfriend Tiago (from Portugal) and her cat Lucas during our 2 day stay in Hamburg. Lucas was a riot in that she (yes you read that right, she apparently was a naming mistake) would sneak upon Dee in the kitchen from a shelf overhead sending the Pai squealing out for fear of having her face taken apart.

Ksneia and Tiago were extremely generous in hosting us as they had just moved in to their new place and even though they had most of their stuff wrapped in plastic and in boxes they put out an air mattress for us. Had a ball with these 2 very diverse people!

The magnificent port

The Facts

  • Hamburg is definitely worth a visit to view its museums and the churches that had been bombed during WW2
  • The port itself is worth a day’s visit
  • ALWAYS carry an umbrella and a jacket with you.
